Gayeshwar faces arrest warrant



A Dhaka court today issued an arrest warrant against BNP Joint Secretary General Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a case filed for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information about his property.

Judge AMN Bashir Ullah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order as the BNP leader did not appear before it today as per a court order.

Gayeshwar was earlier granted an interim bail from the High Court till submission of the police report and today was the scheduled date for his appearance before the court as the investigation officer has already placed the probe report.

On January 6, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against the BNP leader with the Ramna Thana on charges of extorting Tk 2.61 crore and concealing information of his wealth worth Tk 25.95 lakh from the commission.

In the case, ACC Deputy Director SM Mofidul Islam alleged that Gayeshwar extorted Tk 1.94 crore from the managing director (MD) of M/s Abdul Monem Ltd in 2004 during the rule of BNP-Jamaat alliance government and around Tk 67 lakh from the MD of M/s Reza Constructions Ltd.

The ACC official also mentioned that the former state minister concealed information about his wealth worth Tk 25.95 lakh in the wealth statement submitted to the ACC on August 20 last year.

According to the case statement, Gayeshwar received Tk 1.94 crore in cash and cheques from M/s Abdul Monem Ltd as extortion. He was paid the amount in phases after M/s Abdul Monem Ltd got the tender for filling earth in Purbachal New Town Project of Rajuk.

The BNP leader also received Tk 67 lakh from M/s Reza Constructions Ltd as extortion.

The ACC official alleged that Gayeshwar owned properties worth Tk 1, 27,71,373. But in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC, the BNP leader mentioned his wealth worth Tk 1,01,76,268.
